JACK AND THE BEANSTALK : WITH COLOUR PICTURES
There lived at one time an idle, careless boy whose name was Jack. His father had died and his mother was old and very poor. Jack never doing any work, left himself and mother without any money. They had nothing but the brown cow. One day Jack's mother sent him to the market to sell the cow.
On his way to the market he met a man who had some pretty beans in his hand. Jack admiring the beans, stopped to look at them.
Presently the man said, in a low voice: "Give me the ugly brown cow, and you may have the beans."
"Thank you, sir," said Jack, and accepted the man's offer. Taking the beans he at once ran home to show his mother how well he had sold the ugly brown cow. She grew very angry when Jack told her of his good bargain. She then threw the beans into the garden, and sat down to cry. The poor lady had no fire nor bread. It was getting dark, and the hour of Jack's bedtime was near at hand. Jack had to go to bed without supper; sleeping well during the night. He woke late next morning, as usual, and was surprised, to see the beans his mother had thrown into the garden had grown up and twisted like a ladder.
The ladder seemed to Jack as high as the sky. His heart was beating with joy and he ran down to the garden to climb the ladder. As he began to climb, his mother cried out for him to stop, and even got her old shoes and threw them at him. Jack paid no attention to his mother, and went on up the ladder, above the trees, above the steeples, till he came to a strange land. Then he stepped off the bean stalk, and began wandering about the strange land. He tried hard to find a house, but in vain. Getting very tired and hungry Jack was now beginning to see that he did wrong by not minding his mother.
As he was looking around, he happened to see a young Fairy hovering around him, who told him he must go straight on till he came to a large house where a fierce giant lived. She said that this giant had killed Jack's father, and stolen all his money, and that Jack must be very brave and kill the wicked giant, and get all the money back for his poor mother. Jack was getting afraid, and thought he would not be successful, but he took courage and made up his mind to try.
