This was an excellent read, however a dense one. While enrolled in a Medical Anthropology course for my undergrad degree I was required to read this one. Trust me, this is something that you would just pick up for a weekend read. It has a lot of topics that you really must sit down and think about.
Paul Farmer is a medical doctor and an anthropologist who has a big goal, to save the world. I must say that after I read this I felt that my goals very too small compared to this man. This book talks about Haiti in detail and the problems that the people there have faced, and why them. Most people still have the mindset that Haiti is the birthplace of AIDS and that is was brought to the US from there, however that is not the case. The actual story is different; AIDS was actually brought to Haiti from the US in most cases, and in some by American military who visited the island. This is one truth the Farmer brings out into the light, as well as some other truths about Haiti and AIDS.
Farmer does an amazing job at discussing why Haiti. Not many people have ever looked at sickness and disease and wondered why some places have them and others don't. Haiti is a very poor county, this is the first factor for why. The second is their status as a nation; they have almost always been under the control of someone else or are/have been supported by another country and to this puts them on the lowest rung of the ladder. Because they are poor, of African descent, and social isolated/irrelevant, diseases and sickness still run rampant. I am not going to give any more of Farmer's argument away.
You should definitely get this book and read it. And then re-read it to think about it. Discuss it with others, try to figure out what Farmer is saying. Maybe if enough people read it, something will change.
