Read full description of the books:
This book offers a fascinating account of Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire through to the end of the tenth century. In its wide-ranging coverage of the period, it takes into account social, economic and political changes as well as the important cultural changes, including the rise of Islam and the recreation of a western empire under the Cardingians.
[From back cover:]
This new edition of Roger Collins's classic textbook history of early medieval Europe is fully updated and revised to take account of the latest scholarship. The author provides a synoptic, yet detailed, account of the centuries during which Europe changed from being an abstract geographical expression into a new, culturally cohenrent, if politically divided, entity. It examines how the social, economic and cultural structures of Antiquity were replaced by their medieval equivalents, and it also seeks to define the European context by looking at those external forces - such as the nomadic confederacies of Central Asia and the Islamic empire of the Arabs - which helped to shaoe it through conflict.
The centuries studied here are vital ones for the understanding of the formation of many aspects of the political and intellectual heritage of modern Europe. For better or worse, ideas and institutions formed in this period continue to influence those fo the present. The major themes of the history of these times - the fall of the Roman Empire, the establishment of the dominance of Christianity in Europe and the parallel rise of the rival world religion of Islam, together with the unfulfilled aspirations towards the revival of a Christian 'Roman' Empire in the West under the Carolingians - are all large-scale ones that have fascinated and perplexed subsequent generations.
Not surprisingly, these centures have attracted the attention of many historians, above all in the last two decades. This book seeks to provide a synthesis of hte latest research, while aspiring to make its own distinctive contribution to the subjects discussed, both in detail and in general interpretations. Substantial references are intended to provide guidance for further reading and research.
